1. Read the Questions First
You will have some time to read the questions before each recording is played. Read the questions very carefully as you will only hear each recording once, so you should familiarize yourself with the questions before you hear the recording join best IELTS coaching in Hyderabad.
2. Take Notes as You Go and Keep Listening
To Take Notes
As you listen, write your answers in your test notebook and then transfer them at the end of the listening test. You will have 10 minutes to do so. Be sure to check that you have uploaded your answers correctly and don’t forget to check spelling and grammar. Also, complete your answer sheet. That means the answer sheet is incomplete.
Keep Listening
Sometimes you hear the response and think that’s it, but…there’s more! Also, Often what you hear first is not the right answer. Here is an example. Questions first:
What time does the exhibition open on Saturday?
- At 2 p.m.
- B) 4 p.m.
- C) 7 p.m.
As a result, in the task, you hear somebody talking about the opening time:
On weekends we are open at two o’clock in the afternoon, but now it is the opening time on weekdays, Also, except Mondays which are closed. So the exhibition opens at 2pm today with a special evening at 7pm. On weekends, we always open the doors at 4 p.m.
The correct answer (C) came right at the end of this example. So even if you think you have the right answer, keep listening until you’ve heard all the information.
3. Listen for Keywords and Use Signs and Titles
Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything you hear. Listen to the keywords of the questions and focus on what you need to listen to.
If you miss a question, don’t dwell on it because you might miss the answer to the next one. So if you miss one, move on.
Sometimes in IELTS Listening there is quite a long gap between the information needed to answer one question and the next. This especially happens in the lecture in Section 4. So, what do you do to make sure where you are in part 4?
Headings
Look at your answer sheet and you will see that there are headings that show you what the different parts of the presentation are about. Here is an example of part of an IELTS 4 listening section.
- Indoor farming
- Started in the early 20th century
- Also, involve growing crops in 33 _____ greenhouses
Imagine that you have answered question 32 and are waiting for question 33. The Indoor Farming subheading will help you spot when the information for the next answer is coming. Here is what tells you that you are now approaching question 33.
“Well, that’s where science, farming and design come together, and let’s start by talking about indoor farming. The concept itself is not new.
Signposts
The “Let’s start talking about” sign clearly alerts you to the answer to come.
The good news is that these panels are everywhere in IELTS Listening. So Here are the quick list of several you might hear in part 4:

- For example, …
- First / Second / Another …
- In addition to …
- As well as this,…
- On the one hand, on the other hand, …
- A major advantage is…
- The problem, however, is…
- So listen carefully for those “signposts” that tell you what’s next.
4. Track Word Count
Be sure to follow the word count in the instructions for each question. For example, if the instructions “don’t write more than one word” say you write “train” instead of “train”, your answer will be marked as incorrect.
